Malon, Ingwersen recognize local Biddeford manufacturing company for achievement in technology and science

AUGUSTA – Last week, Rep. Marc Malon, D-Biddeford, and Sen. Henry Ingwersen, D-Arundel, presented a legislative sentiment to members of FMI, a materials company based in Biddeford, in recognition of winning the inaugural Maine Science Award for Impact from the Maine Science Discovery Museum.

Established in 1969, FMI has developed materials in partnership with key agencies, including NASA, to create thermal-resistant composites for machinery such as rocket re-entry nose tips. The firm, with a workforce of over 400, provides employment opportunities for Mainers interested in pursuing high-tech manufacturing.

“Biddeford has long been known as a home for the innovative and industrious,” said Rep. Malon. “FMI follows in that tradition by creating new and powerful technology to keep some of our nation's most advanced machinery, like rocket ships, operational. FMI should be proud of their contributions not only to Maine’s scientific community, but to our workforce as well.”

“I was very pleased to cosponsor this legislative sentiment and join Rep. Malon to present it to the folks at FMI in Biddeford,” said Sen. Ingwersen. “I continue to be amazed by the innovative industries setting up shop and working with our local regional technical school and community college to train a skilled workforce and expand good paying career opportunities in our district. Biddeford has long been a city full of hard workers who make high-quality products in factories, mills and warehouses.”

FMI is one of five organizations selected for recognition at the Maine Discovery Museum’s inaugural Maine Science Awards on Oct. 15 in Bangor. The event brings together subject-matter experts and advocates to celebrate the sciences industries across the state.

Rep. Malon is serving his second term in Maine’s House of Representatives and represents a portion of Biddeford. He serves on the Housing and Economic Development Committee and the Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee.

Sen. Henry Ingwersen is serving his second term in the Maine Senate. He represents Senate District 32, which includes Arundel, Biddeford, Dayton, Hollis and Lyman. Sen. Ingwersen is the Senate chair of the Legislature’s Health and Human Services Committee. He also serves as a member of the Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry Committee.
