German Manufacturing Faces Worsening Supply Shortages Amid Global Tensions

(MENAFN) German manufacturers experienced a further decline in the availability of key materials in May, with supply chain disruptions continuing to affect industrial operations amid persistent geopolitical uncertainty.

According to a report released Tuesday by a German economic research institute, 14.2% of manufacturing firms surveyed reported difficulties obtaining crucial raw materials and intermediate products. The figure rose from 13.8% in April and represents a substantial increase compared with 5.8% recorded at the beginning of the year.

As stated by reports, ongoing instability in the Middle East, combined with security-related restrictions affecting major maritime trade routes, has continued to hamper the movement of industrial inputs into Germany.

The findings indicate that shortages remain most pronounced in sectors with high energy consumption and industries dependent on petrochemical materials and oil-derived components.

The chemical sector has been particularly affected, with 31.1% of companies reporting significant shortages of essential materials. As a result, several firms have signaled plans to reduce production levels in the months ahead.

Reports also showed worsening procurement challenges in other industries. Among manufacturers of rubber and plastic products, 22.9% reported supply-related difficulties, while 17.2% of electrical equipment producers faced major delays in receiving necessary components and materials.
